1966 Ford GT 40 #1. The finish to the 1966 24 hours lf LeMans is one of the most bizarre, if not controversial, finishes in motorsports history. Ford's lead driver Ken Miles had already won the 24 hours of Datyona and the 12 hours of Sebring in 1966 and was going for the elusive triple crown of Daytona, Sebring and LeMans in the same year
His most frequently used cars are parked closest to the door, including a 2004 Ford GT and a 2017 Heritage Edition Ford GT in the same No. 2 white-over-black livery as the '66 Le Mans winner.
And this is the car that earned Ford that first win back in 1966. Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon drove this black-and-silver GT40, chassis P/1046, to first place at Le Mans 50 years ago.
Chassis P/1016 is believed to be the only GT40 Mk II that ever raced with the unusual PowerShift automatic transaxle. For the 1966 Le Mans race on June 18th and 19th, GT40 P/1016 received final preparations on the day before the race, including the addition of matte Day-Glo pink highlights on the nose and flanks of its Kandy Gold bodywork.
Ken Miles Died August 17, 1966, in testing crash of Ford J-car. Was instrumental in developing Mk2 GT40 to succeed at Le Mans. Denis Hulme Died 4 October, 1992, while competing in Bathurst 24-hour race. An F1 driver of note, he won the 1967 F1 World Championship. Ronnie Bucknum Died April 23, 1992.
1966 was special in many other ways. It was the start of the end for dominant Ferrari in sports car racing, despite showing up with the 330 P3, a 420 HP, 1600 pound missile. It did win at Spa but the story was all about Daytona and Le Mans where Ford established it's dominance with the heavy but extra potent 7 liter GT40 MkII.
Three iterations of the GT40 won over those four yearsāthe Mk II in 1966, Mk IV in 1967, and Mk I in 1968 and 1969. The gallery features photos from the Fordās 1960s Le Mans run. 24 Hours of
